What's Your SEO IQ? Today's Topic: Site Indexing

I'm often asked if it's best to just pay a service company to submit your website to the search engines and directories. After all, there are thousands of them, and there are companies that charge $25.00 to do all that work for you? I'm sure you've seen the advertising stating "we guarantee top-ten placement in thousands of search engines" and "We'll register you in 5,000 search engines today".

Unfortunately, SEO isn't quite that simple. You don't need to be a rocket scientist, but you just can't pay someone $50 and hope they will just handle it for you. Most Web sites today don't have a chance -- mostly because of simple mistakes (those you can fix yourself if you know what you are looking for). Often times, these mistakes are made by the Web designer or developer because they really don't have any idea how to make a page search engine friendly. They don't pay attention to titles, descriptions and keywords or any of the other factors that should be considered when creating pages you want the world to see -- and to be able to find you through on the World Wide Web. You can submit your site to the search engines yourself - quickly and easily - and don't have to pay someone to do this for you.

My recommendation is that you focus on the largest three -- Google, Yahoo! and MSN/Bing. These three account for the bulk of the search engine traffic - and also feed many of the other search sites on the Internet.

Submitting your site to the search engines is an important step. But before you do, you have to make sure that each and every page on your web site is fully optimized for search engines, so that you can take maximum advantage of the investment you've made in your Web site. What you need is a program that helps to demystify web page optimization and that can visually show you exactly what's going on with your site and pages - and what can be done to optimize each page on your site. You'll also want guidance on what to do with the overall site optimization.

The changes you'll need to make to your site aren't necessarily difficult, but instead of reading a book that will both make your head spin and most of it won't apply to your specific Web site, visual web optimization software lets you see exactly what's going on with your site and immediately take action to correct problems that might prevent the search engines from indexing your site's pages.
